Arson: Exploring Motives and Possible Solutions

چکیده
Disclaimer: This research paper does not necessarily reflect the policy position of the Commonwealth Government. Adam Graycar Director The arson rate in Australia has climbed significantly over the past 30 years. From geographical and environmental perspectives, Australia is at extreme risk of bushfires, yet there is virtually no empirical data concerning bushfire arsonists, or arsonists in general, in Australia. Over 30 years the Australian population has grown by 50 per cent, while recorded arsons have increased by almost 2,000 per cent. If the current arson rate continues to grow as it has, the number of cases reported to police nationwide will approximately double every 10 years. This paper explores the possible motives for arson, with special attention given to psychological disorders that may be associated with fire-starting. Also investigated are methods to tackle the problem of arson, including public awareness campaigns and fire safety education for young people. As fire has such a devastating effect, prevention mechanisms should work from a sound knowledge base. Unfortunately, this is lacking in Australia today and the current shortage of scientific research on arsonists is a significant obstacle to reducing the problem of arson in Australia.

Reporting professional errors is an essential step towards improving patient safety not only in hospitals but also outpatient healthcare centers. Unfortunately, nurses, like many other members of the medical team, do not report most of their mistakes and errors in performance. The objective of this study was to assess possible determinants of the tendency to report nursing errors by exploring t...

متن کاملDoes Serious Offending Lead to Homicide? Exploring the Inter-relationships and Sequencing of Serious Crime
The inter-relationships between serious types of crime have been neglected. Focusing on those convicted of arson (n=45,915), blackmail (n=5,774), kidnapping (n=7,291) and threats to kill (n=9,816) in England and Wales (1979-2001), we examine the specialisation and sequencing of these crimes in relation to the risk of subsequent homicide. All four offences have a heightened likelihood of subsequ...

Wildland arson makes up the majority of fire starts in some parts of the United States and is the second leading cause of fires on Eastern United States Federal forests. Individual arson fires can cause damages to resources and communities totaling over a hundred million dollars. Recent research has uncovered the temporal and spatial patterns of arson fires and their longand short-term drivers....
متن کاملTime to Burn: Modeling Wildland Arson
Six Poisson autoregressive models of order p [PAR(p)] of daily wildland arson ignition counts are estimated for five locations in Florida (1994–2001). In addition, a fixed effects time-series Poisson model of annual arson counts is estimated for all Florida counties (1995–2001). PAR(p) model estimates reveal highly significant arson ignition autocorrelation, lasting up to eleven days, in additi...
